Carpets are great for insulating the house and creating a beautiful ambiance, but they are dust collectors. And if the carpet in question has long pile (shaggy carpet), it’s even worse! How to take care of it? Here are some answers!
1) What to avoid with a shaggy rug
On this type of carpet, cleaning with steam should be avoided at all costs. Cleaning the carpet with plenty of water is also not recommended, as it soaks the hair too much. When it comes to brushing, avoid doing too much so as not to damage the carpet. You risk doing more harm than good so limit yourself to brushing once a month with a special brush.
We advise you not to start any washing without first testing the product on an inconspicuous part of your carpet. In general, all products can be suitable, but we are never safe from unpleasant surprises (bleeding colors, damaged hairs, etc.).
2) Daily maintenance of a long pile carpet
Try vacuuming it twice a week using maximum power (without a brush and without scrubbing too hard). By doing it often, dirt is less likely to become encrusted and since it is the dust which tarnishes its beautiful shiny appearance, the vacuum cleaner is therefore an aid of choice.
If your rug is not too heavy, you can also consider shaking it outside by hand or laying it out to hit it with a broom handle to knock out crumbs and dirt.
3) In case of stain on your shaggy carpet
Act quickly! Dab the stain in the middle with a damp cloth until the stain has been absorbed, then go over with a dry cloth to wipe. If the stain is wet, avoid rubbing so that the stain does not spread to other hairs.
To clean the carpet more thoroughly, you can use soapy water and a sponge or a mixture of water and white alcohol. Then rinse with water mixed with white vinegar.
If possible, dry it outside, the sun helps get rid of unpleasant odors. Always prefer to dry in the open air.
