Fashion is in constant renewal and what is trendy today will not necessarily be trendy tomorrow. But what is certain is that jeans are and will always be essential pieces in a wardrobe even if they can feature different shapes or patterns! However, their maintenance cannot be improvised and certain actions will allow you to keep it for longer.
1) When choosing
Do not hesitate to favor jeans that contain lycra or elastane in small quantities (1 or 2% maximum, otherwise your pants risk becoming deformed too quickly). Thanks to this, your jeans will keep their shape longer and will not have pockets at the knees or buttocks.
2) To avoid
Avoid washing your jeans too often unless you wear the same ones every day! Wear it at least five times before putting it in the wash (unless it has a stain, obviously). We also don’t recommend using the dryer unless you absolutely want to end up with shrunken denim. As for the iron, it damages and wears out the fibers and should therefore not be used. When spinning after hand washing, do not wring the fabric to avoid deforming it. You can put your pants between two terry towels to wring out as much water as possible.
3) To do
If your jeans don’t look dirty, you can place them in the freezer in a freezer bag overnight to kill bacteria. Otherwise, two techniques are available to you: the machine or the hand. Professionals generally advise against machine washing, but you can opt for cold washing. without adding softener (this leaves traces) or just white vinegar to fix the color. For hand washing, opt for cold water, mild detergent and gentle scrubbing. In both cases, wash inside out.
4) To fix the color
You can fix the color on new jeans by preparing a basin of lukewarm water with five tablespoons of coarse salt or a basin of lukewarm water with a cup of white vinegar and a handful of coarse salt. Leave it to soak overnight and wash it alone.
5) Don’t be afraid to make small repairs or modifications
If your denim is no longer to your taste, you can always modify it by making cuts in it, by wearing it in places with a razor, by cutting it to transform it into something else or by adding lace for example . For the holes, you can obviously sew a patch or use thread of the same color as your pants and sew at the hole area to patch it like in this video:
