Even the best cast iron pans (the ones that take great care of, because they cost an arm and a leg) are not immune to the appearance of rust. No matter how diligently we clean them and dry them well, nothing works! However, we have an unbeatable weapon against rust in our kitchen: the potato! We already told you a little about it in our article which talked about removing rust from knives. The reason this works is that it contains oxalic acid which is tough on rust. Here’s what you need to do step by step to get your pans and other rusty tools back.
What you need:
- A potato
- Dishwashing liquid or baking soda
- Elbow grease (a little)
The steps:
1) Cut the potato in half lengthwise or widthwise depending on the width of the surface to be cleaned.
2) Dip the flesh in dishwashing liquid or baking soda.
3) Scrub the rust vigorously.
4) If the flesh starts to soften or become damaged, cut a slice and you are ready to scrub again after having re-soaked everything in baking soda or dishwashing detergent.
5) Continue until the rust is gone. And there you have it!
