Along with ventilation, the deodorizer is one of the simplest tricks there is to find a more breathable smell and it is very useful on a daily basis with kitchen odors that are felt throughout the house, a musty smell in a cupboard or that of your adorable doggie on textiles (armchairs, sofa, basket, carpet, etc.). You can even use it in the toilet! By doing it yourself, you will save money and avoid inviting the chemical pollution that classic supermarket sprays represent (which also smell so strong that it makes you suffocate or gives you a headache). It’s natural, effective and inexpensive!
What you need:
- A spray bottle recycled or purchased for the occasion (prefer one that sprays finely like a mist)
- 700 ml of water
- 30 g baking soda
- 30 to 40 drops of essential oil(s) (you can take just one or make a mixture)
The steps:
1) Pour the bicarbonate into a container.
2) Add the drops of essential oil(s) and stir carefully.
3) You can then pour the scented bicarbonate into the bottle then cover with water or mix these two elements before transferring them to the sprayer.
4) Close and shake the bottle well. Your air freshener is ready to use. The baking soda will help neutralize odors and the essential oil provides the freshness the room needs… it’s a great duo!
Some last minute clarifications :
- If you have cats, be careful! Essential oils can be very toxic to them. For dogs, this is less of a problem, but choose ones that won’t bother them.
- Baking soda sometimes leaves small whitish residues if the sprayer is not perfect. These traces continue to fight against odors by neutralizing them and will easily be removed by brushing or vacuuming.
