Cooking smells… it’s quite a story! Between the more or less pleasant smells of good food and scents of unknown origin, this room can hold some olfactory surprises. In any case, you don’t have to look long to understand where refrigerator odors come from when leftovers, poorly packaged smelly cheeses or fruits and vegetables are left there for too long and they end up rotting. To deal with odors, we suggest you concoct these super simple little tablets, but we might as well make it clear right away: they do not replace regular cleaning of the fridge and good management of packaging and leftovers.
What you need:
- Silicone molds
- 460 g baking soda
- About 80 ml of water
- 20 drops of essential oil
For the recipe, we recommend lavender or more food odors which will not be bothersome in a fridge. Citrus or mint essential oils are ideal for this.
The steps:
1) In a salad bowl, mix all your ingredients carefully. The texture should look a bit like wet sand. If this is not the case, do not hesitate to add a few spoons of water little by little until the texture is ideal.
2) Compact your preparation in your silicone molds so as not to have too much air in the discs and to ensure that it will be very solid.
3) Let your tablets dry at room temperature for a good two days. If patience is not your strong point, nothing stops you from heating them at low temperature in your oven. Allow around two hours at 80°C (you can leave it longer if the center is not dry and the pebbles remain crumbly).
How to use them?
They are stored in an airtight container. A glass jar or box will do the trick. Take a tablet and put it in a corner of the fridge. You can replace it after about a month when its effectiveness in absorbing and eliminating odors will be less.
