How to clean a drain and combat unpleasant odors?

Save it for later!

The sink drain is a breeding ground for dirt. It is therefore not very surprising that unpleasant odors can end up escaping. You can of course opt for the solution of usual household products based on chemicals. However, these can be toxic and what’s more, it risks damaging the pipes (ultimately causing expenses to change it!). You can also choose to neutralize the bad odor with natural and inexpensive products that you probably have at home. Bad smells just have to be careful!

What you need:

  • Baking soda – about 90 g
  • White vinegar – about 250 ml (or if necessary, lemon juice)
  • Optional: Essential oil

The steps:

1) If you have a double sink, plug one of the sinks to take care of the other then reverse.

2) Put the baking soda in the sink. It is very effective in absorbing and deodorizing foul odors from sewers and maceration at the drain level.

3) Add the vinegar and leave to act. These two ingredients create bubbles and will gently descend along your pipes, dissolving grease to remove dirt. By the way, this will eliminate bad odors!

4) Leave on for 10 minutes then rinse with water. The ideal would be to boil water and use this boiling water for a powerful rinse against persistent bad odors and grease accumulated in the pipes. Do not hesitate to run a wipe of steel wool in your sink to easily remove all residue.

5) If you wish, you can add a few drops of essential oil of your choice to perfume the kitchen or the bathroom with a good smell: essential oil of lavender, eucalyptus, lemon, tea tree, peppermint, etc.

6) You can then repeat on the drain on the other side if you have a double sink.

The little extra: you can also try this technique when the sink is clogged to unclog it. In addition, you can also avoid stubborn odors and maintain the pipes by throwing a little coffee grounds in them. Moreover, this is one of the many tips for recycling it intelligently!
