Make a tawashi yourself, this dishwashing sponge that lasts a lifetime

Save it for later!

The rental you just booked for a spring break is fully equipped, but you can’t get your hands on that damn sponge? Instead of buying ones sold in packs of four at the local convenience store, make one yourself. All you need to do is sacrifice a pair of socks, old tights, towels, leggings or t-shirt. And what’s more, tawashi is much more hygienic. This multi-use creation allows you to wash dishes and clean, disinfect or scrub all surfaces. Here is a very simple tutorial to help you create this durable, zero-waste Japanese dishcloth that will last you a lifetime. Goodbye nests of disposable bacteria which are not very ecological!

Also discover how to make your own washable and reusable paper towel rolls.

What you will need:

  • A small wooden board
  • 20 large flat-headed nails (which will act as a homemade loom)
  • An old pair of clean tights, socks or leggings

Preparing your tawashi:

1/ Draw a 14 centimeter square with a gray pencil on the board.

2/ Plant a nail 3 centimeters from each corner then plant the other nails 2 centimeters from each other. Your loom is ready.

3/ Cut 10 strips of 3 centimeters wide from the fabric you have chosen.

4/ Thread a row of 5 vertical strips onto the loom.

5/ Thread them perpendicularly, weaving one stroke above, one stroke below.

6/ To finish, cast off the stitches: take the last stitch from one corner of the square, pass it through the stitch on its left, and so on until only one stitch remains which will allow you to hang your tawashi on your faucet.

Here is the video tutorial, because it is always simpler in pictures:

And there you have it, you are now the proud owner of an ecological and economical sponge, which you can also hang up for faster drying! As the tawashi is very ventilated, bacteria and dirt will not be able to lodge there for very long. In addition, like the fibers that make it up, tawashi is washable in the washing machine with your usual cleaning products (if possible ecological and without chemicals to complete your process)! An eco-friendly sponge that has everything good.
