Summer does our hair no favors. So of course, there is already the effect of solar radiation and the wind which can harm their health, but if you also rely on swimming to cool off, they can quickly react badly. Contact with chlorine and salt water does not do well with your hair, and repeatedly, it can cause enormous damage! And while a good back-to-school cut to remove damaged lengths and split ends never hurts, you can also protect your hair in summer. To do this, you must adopt a simple technique that does not require any special care product!
Protect your hair with… water?
Rinse well with clean water after swimming is an essential gesture to avoid leaving salt and chlorine, which damages it, on the hair for too long. This will indeed eliminate these residues.
However, you can also wet them thoroughly avant to take a dip in sea or swimming pool water! In fact, they can only retain a limited amount of water. Thus, by saturating them with clear water, they will have less opportunity to gorge themselves with salty or chlorinated water and will therefore end up less damaged. This technique will allow you to keep beautiful hair or at least limit damage, all without needing to wear a swimming cap.
A few more tips to protect your hair in summer
First of all, avoid coloring before leaving so as not to weaken them before you even leave. Also limit the use of hair dryers, straighteners or curling irons. In fact, the devices that emit heat can increase dryness and damage caused by the sun and chlorine.
Make moisturizing masks in preparation for the holidays to strengthen the hair, but also during and after. For example, you can simply mix natural yogurt with two tablespoons of honey and leave for an hour under a warm towel. Preferably, apply these nourishing and hydrating hair masks once or twice a week to repair damage, but also moisturize and strengthen the hair.
Additionally, use a spray or hair oil that contains a UV filter to protect your hair from the sun’s rays. In parallel, opt for protective hairstyles such as braids, buns or ponytails to reduce sun exposure and limit damage from wind and water. Also wear a hat or scarf as much as possible to protect your hair and scalp from UV rays.
Otherwise, consider oil bath vegetable once a week for at least one hour. Use here coconut oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, olive oil, argan oil, castor oil…
Finally, if your hair is bleached, rinse it with a mixture of baking soda and water to prevent it from turning green.
