Maintaining the roof of a house is not the easiest thing… especially when you are not professional and you undertake this tedious task which requires many precautions security. However, whether for roof cleaning or roof moss removal, simple techniques exist. However, when we encounter algae, moss and lichens that accumulate, they can quickly create water infiltration and harm the longevity of the roof. The waterproofness of slates is no longer guaranteed because of the porosity induced by the installation of micro-organisms. For prevention (and not treatment), it is possible to use a very simple, economical and still little-known technique. It consists of taking advantage of copper to prevent moss on the roof. We tell you everything below!
Use copper to prevent moss on the roof
Since the days of traditional thatched roofs, it is a very classic prevention process which still works on the materials used on our modern roofs. It is enough to‘install copper wires at the top of the roof and allow rainwater and oxidation to spread copper sulfates throughout the roof. This prevents plant development. It is estimated that a wire of 2.5 mm in diameter is sufficient for a roof of 100 m² and we strongly recommendtwist two wires into a twist for greater efficiency. There are also strips to be placed on or under the ridge of the roof, just like the wires. Adhesive materials will hold everything in place along the entire length to prevent friction and noise on the roof.
The advantages and disadvantages of copper for removing moss from the roof
Copper has excellent longevity, does not spoil the aesthetics of the roof thanks to its truly discreet appearance and withstands extreme temperatures without problem. It is therefore not only economical, but also ecological and safe if we takes care to collect the resulting coppery water with bad weather and evacuate them intelligently. In fact, they can be harmful to certain animals. This point should therefore not be neglected.
Attentioncopper is totally incompatible with zinc roofs and gutters. So use another type of preventative anti-moss treatment for your facades!
